Abstract Awards and Grants

The Abstract Awards and Grants submission process has changed for World Microbe Forum. While submitting your abstract, you will also have the option to select what awards or grants you'd like to apply for, and will be able to upload any supporting documents. ASM and FEMS offer the following abstract awards and grants to help offset the costs of attending and presenting at the World Microbe Forum: 

ASM Awards

Outstanding Abstract Award

Sponsored by ASM and determined by the ASM Microbe Program Committee, these awards highlight outstanding abstracts presented by students, residents, or medical/clinical fellows. All abstracts submitted by the deadline will be considered for these awards. Awards will include complimentary meeting registration.

To qualify for consideration, the applicant must:

  • Submit an abstract for World Microbe Forum.

ASM Infectious Disease (ID) Abstract Award

The ASM Infectious Disease (ID) Abstract Award provides financial support for Infectious Disease Fellows to attend World Microbe Forum. 

Eligibility
To qualify for consideration, the applicant must be:

  • A current ASM member at the time of World Microbe Forum.
  • A Ph.D. or M.D. enrolled in an ID Fellowship Program at the time of application.
  • Not previously a recipient of the award within the last 2 years.
  • A presenting author on an accepted abstract to World Microbe Forum.

ASM Microbe Minority Abstract Award 

This abstract award encourages increased participation of underrepresented minority (URM) groups at World Microbe Forum. 

Eligibility
To qualify for consideration, the applicant must be:

  • A current ASM member at the time of World Microbe Forum.
  • From one of the targeted groups:
    • Faculty from a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCU).
    • Faculty from community colleges.
    • URM Faculty regardless of institutional type.
    • URM Postdoctoral Scholars.
    • URM Graduate Students.
  • A U.S. citizen.
  • Positioned to have access to students from URM groups pursuing areas related to the microbiological sciences.
  • Experienced in training and mentoring minority students (URM postdoctoral fellows can be selected in this category because of their potential to serve as role models and mentors for URMs training at their institutions).
  • Committed to research in microbiology and related sciences, diversity and volunteer services.

ASM Student and Postdoctoral Abstract Award 

The ASM Student and Postdoctoral Abstract Award is selected on the basis of the scientific quality of submitted abstracts.  

Eligibility
To qualify for consideration, the applicant must be:

  • A current ASM member at the time of World Microbe Forum.
  • A student of postdoc.
  • Not previously a recipient of the award within the last 2 years.
  • A presenting author on an accepted abstract to World Microbe Forum.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Abstract Award for Scientists from Low and Low-Middle Income Countries 

This award is offered to scientists in low- and low-middle-income countries who would otherwise be unable to attend the meeting. Many awardees work in areas with a high burden of disease and would benefit greatly from the scientific content presented at the meeting, as well as gain significant value from networking with their colleagues from around the world. 

Recipients will receive complimentary registration for the World Microbe Forum. 

Eligibility
To qualify for consideration, the applicant must be:

  • A current ASM member at the time of World Microbe Forum.
  • A resident of a low-income or low-middle-income country, as defined by the World Bank.
  • A presenting author on an accepted abstract to World Microbe Forum.

Carlyn Halde Latin American Student Abstract Award

This travel award, administered by ASM in collaboration with the Medical Mycological Society of the Americas (MMSA), supports the attendance of a student medical microbiologist from Latin America, Puerto Rico or the Caribbean to participate in ASM Microbe. This award is funded by an endowment from longtime ASM and MMSA member, Dr. Carlyn Halde. The awardee will attend the MMSA meeting held in conjunction with World Microbe Forum. The recipient will also be asked to give a short talk on medical mycology at his or her institution. 

Eligibility
To qualify for consideration, the applicant must be:

  • A current ASM member at the time of World Microbe Forum.
  • A medical microbiology undergraduate student, graduate student, or Ph.D. or M.D. (whose degree has been awarded after June 2020, but before May 2021) from Latin America, Puerto Rico, or the Caribbean. 
  • A presenting author on an accepted abstract to World Microbe Forum.

The Richard and Mary Finkelstein Student Abstract Award 

This award provides support for students attending World Microbe Forum. Each awardee will present a poster, in addition to being invited to give a short presentation of the abstract during the meeting. Only 1 travel award will be granted per laboratory.

Eligibility
To qualify for consideration, the applicant must be:

  • A current ASM member at the time of World Microbe Forum.
  • A undergraduate or predoctoral student; Ph.D. or M.D. within 2 years of graduation at the time of the meeting; or an M.D. in a residency or fellowship program within 6 years of the M.D. degree at the time of the meeting. 
  • Not previously a recipient of the award within the last 2 years.
  • A presenting author on an accepted abstract to World Microbe Forum.

FEMS Grants

FEMS-ASM Mäkelä-Cassell Abstract Award for Early Career Scientists 

The FEMS-ASM Award supports the reciprocal exchange of one member from each organization to present his/her research at the other organization’s main conference. It has been designed to benefit early career scientists from both organizations by giving them the opportunity to present their work overseas and experience the best of microbiology in the partner country.

Eligibility
To qualify for consideration, the applicant must be:

  • A microbiologist active in research and current Ph.D. (or equivalent) student, or recipeint of Ph.D. within the last five years.
  • A current ASM member at the time of World Microbe Forum.

FEMS Congress Attendance Grants 

Members of FEMS Member Societies can appy for grants for research and training, or for support for attending a meeting. You do not need to be a member of a FEMS Member Society to apply for a Congress Attendance Grant.
